International Steel Mill
SES Safety and Health consultants were asked to
provide professional expertise regarding rigging safety.
A study was completed to determine each crane’s use,
safe work practices, and an assessment of whether safety
latches on hooks should be used.
On-site observation of work practices was completed,
along with employee interviews, and research into OSHA
compliance issues and other accepted work practices in
steel mills. SES’s expert opinion was given in
documented, written report form for each crane with
supporting documentation and a consultation regarding
the report with the company was done to go over any
questions.
The assessment allowed the company to determine the
safest crane work practices for their crane operations
and for their employees. Employees felt due diligence
was given to their safety needs, and because of the
employee input, they were allowed to take responsibility
for their own safety.
