Environmental Remediation > Emergency Response
Remediation Construction Site Chemical Recovery
Several dozen bottles of liquid bromine were
uncovered during initial site grading at a new shopping
center development. The bottles of bromine had been
buried on the site by a previous landowner, which
operated a swimming pool supply store. In addition to
the bromine, several other pool related chemicals and
debris were also buried.
The initial emergency response conducted by SES
included regulatory notification, preparation of a site
safety plan, site reconnaissance, and exploratory
trenching to determine the vertical and lateral extent
of buried debris and chemical storage containers. A
high-capacity air handling system was installed to
maintain cross ventilation through the "hot zone". The
chemical containers were then separated from the debris
and over-packed for disposal. All work was conducted in
Level B PPE.
Natural Gas Vapor Release at Elementary School
A broken natural gas feed line beneath an elementary
school resulted in the accumulation of gas vapor beneath
and within the school building. School Board officials
contracted SES to remediate the situation.
SES cored through the floor of the building and
obtained soil vapor samples to map the natural gas
extent. The results of this work were used to design a
remediation system to extract natural gas vapor from
beneath the school building. The remediation system
included nine extraction wells, and 13 monitor ports to
measure subgrade vacuum influence and natural gas
levels. Complete site remediation was accomplished in 3
days, at which point students and staff were allowed to
re-enter the building.
Regional Petroleum Spill Response
SES manages emergency spill response programs for
several regional petroleum marketers. Emergency spill
response programs include:
- Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC)
plan development;
- Regulatory agency notification/ interaction;
- Coordination of containment and recovery of fuel
product;
- Report documentation, and;
- Follow-up procedures.
